NLRC SEC Hold Awareness Seminar to Help Employees Spot and Prevent Investment Scams
Quezon City — Strengthening their commitment to protect the welfare of Filipinos, the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) jointly conducted a seminar on scam awareness and prevention on April 23, 2025.
A total of 80 NLRC employees from both the main office and various Regional Arbitration Branches (RABs) participated in the hybrid seminar, titled “Spotting the Red Flags: Protecting Yourself from Investment Scams,” held onsite and via Zoom.
Atty. Daniel Luis P. Macalino, Assistant Director of the SEC’s Enforcement and Investor Protection Department, served as the resource speaker. He shared practical tips on how to recognize fraudulent investment schemes and protect oneself from becoming a victim.
“If the person enticing you to invest does not have the necessary permit from the SEC and the products advertised do not have the necessary license from the proper government agency, that is a red flag,” Atty. Macalino emphasized during his talk.
He also warned the participants to be careful in sharing personal information, noting that such data could be sold and used for scams, potentially putting one’s safety at risk. “If this happens to you and you do get scammed, please do not be ashamed to report it to the proper government agency, otherwise there could be more victims,” he added.
Further, he encouraged NLRC employees to pass on the knowledge gained from the seminar to friends and family to help spread awareness and protect more people from falling prey to scams.
“If an opportunity presents itself for you to expand your income, you can go for it, but be wise because your hard-earned money is at stake,” he reminded the participants.
In closing, NLRC Executive Clerk of Court IV Mona Lisa Vargas expressed her gratitude to the SEC and Atty. Macalino for the informative session.
“The information shared today will surely be valuable for our employees as they plan and secure their financial futures,” Vargas said. “At the NLRC, we always aim to strike a balance between offering seminars that enhance our professional competencies and those that enrich our personal lives.”
The initiative reflects the continuing efforts of both agencies to promote financial literacy and protect the public from fraudulent activities, reinforcing their shared commitment to uphold the integrity and welfare of the Filipino people.
