NLRC RAB VI Facilitates P2.9 Million Disability Settlement for OFW Seafarer

Bacolod City — In a significant triumph for overseas Filipino workers, the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) Regional Arbitration Branch VI facilitated the amicable settlement of a case filed by a seafarer who worked as a Chief Cook aboard an international vessel. The total settlement amount reached ?2,919,280.00, representing his disability claims against a manning agency.

Facilitated by Labor Arbiter Christine V. Bulanon-Gubalane, the settlement highlights the NLRC’s continuing commitment to delivering timely and just resolutions to labor disputes, particularly those involving overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The case arose from the Chief Cook’s claim for disability benefits after he suffered a work-related injury that rendered him unfit for sea service. Pursuing his rights under the POEA Standard Employment Contract and applicable labor laws, the seafarer filed a complaint before NLRC RAB VI in Bacolod City. Through guided conciliation and mediation, the parties reached a mutually acceptable settlement, avoiding prolonged litigation.

Providing much-needed financial relief to the seafarer and his family, the settlement also emphasizes the vital role of legal mechanisms in protecting the rights and welfare of Filipino workers abroad.

NLRC continues to promote amicable settlements as an effective means of resolving labor disputes, safeguarding the interests of both labor and management.
